Touch Screen in a Table Is the Latest Wrinkle in Computers

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Having just tried its hand at developing a digital music player, Microsoft is working on something new: digital furniture.

The company plans to unveil a computing device today called Microsoft Surface, featuring a 30-inch screen embedded in an acrylic tabletop. The device’s electronic guts are hidden in the low-slung table’s thick pedestal.

At first glance, Surface is reminiscent of an old-fashioned arcade game table around which patrons played Pac-Man. But there is no joystick here, and no mouse or keyboard either. The device is controlled by touching the tabletop display.

Microsoft says this touch screen will allow people to “interact with digital content the same way they have interacted with everyday items such as photos, paintbrushes and music their entire life: with hands, with gestures and by putting real-world objects on the surface.”

For example, when a digital camera with Wi-Fi capabilities is placed on the display, the table recognizes the camera and, at a touch of the screen, downloads its photos and video clips. The digital pictures can be sorted and sized by “handling” them as if they were physical prints.

The device uses cameras under the display to detect touches, and unlike traditional touch screens it can handle multiple touches at the same time, said Jeff Gattis, the director of product management for Surface.

Similarly, Surface can read bar codes and identification tags embedded in objects like hotel chain membership cards.

Microsoft hopes this technology will someday be common in homes, but its first uses will be commercial. By the end of this year, Surface will appear in hotels, restaurants, retail stores and public entertainment sites, where it will serve as an information kiosk and handle things like basic customer service. Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, was scheduled to unveil the product today at The Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference in Carlsbad, Calif.

“With Surface, we are creating more intuitive ways for people to interact with technology,” Mr. Ballmer said in a statement. “We see this as a multibillion-dollar category, and we envision a time when surface computing technologies will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror.”

Microsoft also named several partners that will be among the first companies to use Surface, including Harrah’s Entertainment, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and T-Mobile USA. The device’s cost was not disclosed.

Nokia-developed Cell Phone to warn against Lightning Strikes

Posted by Memey on Thursday, May 24, 2007

Scientists at Nokia have developed software that transforms a mobile phone into a signal receiver and warns the user of an approaching lightning strike.

Basically, a lightning bolt is an electric current that emits radio waves, which each bolt producing frequencies between 10 hertz and 5 gigahertz. However, the distribution of these signals depends on how far away the lightning is.

According to the scientists at Nokia, the multiple receivers in a phone, such as Bluetooth, FM, tri-band GSM, Wi-Fi and RFID, can be tuned to pick up these signals.
The newly developed software then interprets them, works out the distance to the lightning, and tells the user if the lightning strikes are getting closer.

Since lightning can be a major risk to people taking part in outdoor activities such as golfing, jogging etc., the software could become an indispensable safety device for outdoor enthusiasts.
As of now, Nokia has filed a patent (US patent application 2007/0085525) in the United States (US) for the software.

New PlayStation 3 version 1.80 software gives console new capabilities

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Word from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe indicates that the PlayStation 3 will be receiving a significant firmware update on May 24, 2007. New for firmware version 1.80: upscaling of original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games to 1080p when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

With the announcement coming from the offices of Sony Europe, it’s still unknown if the upscaling of older PlayStation software is a result of the revised hardware’ssoftware emulation, meaning that the feature could be exclusive to the Euro-spec PS3. Currently, North American and Japanese PlayStation 3 utilize dedicated PS2 chips for the backwards compatibility of previous-generation titles.

Also on the upscaling front, the new 1.80 update will enable the PS3 to upscale DVD movies up to full 1080p as well. This feature was promised by Phil Harrison back in March, and now gives the PlayStation 3 similar DVD playback capabilities as most other standalone Blu-ray players.

Version 1.80 will finally enable Remote Play on gamers’ PSP across the Internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available. The new firmware also allows users on a home network to view media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house.

Another quirky addition to the PlayStation 3 in 1.80 is the support for a selection of Epson printers, allowing the console to interface and print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media. Such changes reinforce Sony’s desire to make the PlayStation 3 the quintessential media machine.

T-Mobile Launches Windows Mobile Phone

Posted by Memey on Tuesday, May 22, 2007

T-Mobile USA on Tuesday launched the first cell phone in the U.S. to come with Microsoft's latest version of Windows Mobile, with improved handling of e-mail and tougher security. The T-Mobile Wing costs $299 with a two-year contract and runs Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft Corp.'s latest operating system for "smart" phones, which handle e-mail, documents and Web browsing in addition to phone calls.

It's a competitive space: Microsoft is trying to translate its dominance in PC software into an advantage versus Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry, Palm Inc.'s Treo and Apple Inc.'s soon-to-launch iPhone. The advances in the new Windows Mobile version are incremental rather than revolutionary. It lets users read e-mail with embedded images and graphics, and can be set up to receive e-mail instantly from Windows Live Hotmail.
It also supports Live's instant messaging program and Web search. Synchronization of data with Windows Vista computers via Bluetooth wireless connections has been simplified.Security features have been beefed up to appeal to corporate users: If used in conjunction with Microsoft's latest software for corporate e-mail servers, the memory of a lost or stolen device can be wiped remotely by the owner through an Outlook account, with no need to call the IT department.Files stored on removable memory cards can be encrypted, and the device can send and receive e-mail whose readership is controlled by Information Rights Management, useful for sensitive data.
Windows Mobile 6 also allows the user to search remotely stored e-mail and corporate address books. The Wing features a 40-key keyboard that slides out from underneath the 2.8-inch touchscreen. The phone is similar to the discontinued T-Mobile MDA, but smaller, and like the MDA is made by High Tech Computer Corp. of Taiwan.T-Mobile lacks a third-generation broadband cellular network in the U.S., lagging behind the larger cellular carriers. The Wing makes up for this in part by including the capability to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots.Microsoft released Windows Mobile 6 in February. HTC-made phones sporting the software have gone on sale in Europe in the last few months.
Windows Mobile 6 has been available for a few weeks as a download for T-Mobile's Dash smart phone, but the upgrade wipes the handset's memory of all user data. Dash phones with the new software pre-installed will be available in June, T-Mobile said. The carrier said the Dash and the BlackBerry Pearl, which launched last year, have widened the customer base for smart phones beyond corporate road warriors. It says most of the buyers are getting them to replace regular consumer-level camera phones.T-Mobile USA is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG of Germany.

Apple's IPhone Will Be Sold In The US Next Month

Posted by Memey on Thursday, May 17, 2007

The iPhone is Apple's boldest attempt to conquer new technology markets since the company launched the original iPod in October 2001.
The phone, which will cost $500 and be available initially to only AT&T Wireless customers, signifies how strongly Apple believes it needs to diversify from its core Macintosh computer line and turn itself into an all-inclusive media-device company.
Apple unveiled the iPhone in early January. The new touch-screen phone will be able to play music, surf the Internet and take pictures, among other functions.
The iPhone uses a new technology called multitouch to do away with the traditional keyboard found on most phones or personal digital assistants, and replaces it with a screen upon which "buttons" will appear for different functions such as its built-in iPod, phone and Web surfing. It will also have a 3.5-inch diagonal screen and be 11.6 millimeters thick. Apple said that the phone will have a 2-megapixel camera, instant text-messaging capacity, iTunes sync and a visual voice-mail system, which will allow users to read a list of people who called.

Best-Selling Gadget Ever

Posted by Memey on Thursday, May 17, 2007

You must be surprised that this item was mentioned as the best selling gadget in an article in Yahoo. Nokia 1100 handset has outsold even the most ubiquitous gadgets including the iPod, Playstation 2, and even the RAZR. The Nokia 1100 (dubbed "Penny" by the design team) was created in 2002, launched late in 2003, and has been a very popular phone thanks to good timing. This entry-level, stripped-down handset entered the market just in time to catch a cellphone boom in emerging markets.

This phone is as plain as they get. It doesn't have a color screen, music player, or digital camera. However, it does allow texting, houses a flashlight, alarm, and digital clock. Not very appealing, Butthe low price makes anything appealing, especially if its your first cell phone.

Here's how the other players compare:

  • Nokia 100: 200 million

Adobe Photoshop Image and Editing Power

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Adobe Photoshop CS2 promises a lot of image editing power and in the right hands, it can transform any photo into virtually anything you want it to appear. Photoshop CS2 is Adobe's Photoshop v. 9.0, which was released in 2005. CS stands for Creative Suite and CS2 marks the 2nd version since the re-branding of Adobe's products. The software features a more intelligent transform tool, a better replacement tool and multiple layer selection. Some of the best tools in this version were only available as plug-ins in older versions.
If you want to learn Photoshop CS2, use the many resources that are available online. You'll find the best CS2 tutorials here, all for free. Here are some sites you can start with:
Adobe.comStart with the experts. After all, they did create Photoshop CS2 and you'll find a lot of background information on this version from this site. And they're giving it away for free. Go to the tutorials page and look for the link to CS2 (there are links to other Photoshop versions like 7.0 and CS3). There are thousands of tutorials on this site. Simply pick which ones you need to start you on CS2.
You can also check out Photoshop.Support.com, a technical support and advice site. Every free CS tutorial you'll find here is the work of CS2 experts. The tutorials page lists some of the most comprehensive tutorial sessions, enough to make any burgeoning CGI artist feel like a pro.
Access the index on Photoshop CS2 tips by Jennifer Apple to find how to work with layers and type. If you think everything you need to learn about these features are covered by v. 7.0, think again. There's plenty more and this page will show you.
Graphic-Design.comWant to learn feathering, displace maps and pixelsmithing? Go to this site. The free CS2 tutorials are taught using no-nonsense approach and the instructions are easy to understand and follow. There are several specific tutorials on the homepage you can click to but if you want to learn step 1, go to the tutorials link. You'll find some very valuable lessons on CS2 from there.
Lombergar.comThis site is maintained by an award-winning artist and Photoshop user so you can be sure the free tutorials are well-written and taught. You can access the video tutorials featured on the site, although you'll need the latest version of QuickTime player to view them. Each video tutorial is 15 minutes long but it will cover everything you need to know about a particular CS2 lesson. Learn how to fake long exposures, create fake fog and real-looking rain, and many more. You can also access more of the author's video tutorials from the site.
RussellBrown.comAnother site to access free CS2 video tutorials is this site. The friendly tone should set you at ease and as the amiable Dr. Brown will assure you, learning CS2 should be fun. Simply scroll down the page to find the specific CS2 tutorial you need. All video tutorials can be accessed using QuickTime, so make sure you have downloaded your own version.
The free Photoshop tutorials are worth your time so you will need some patience when you're trying to download them from the site, especially if you have slow connection. You might also want to switch a Firefox or Safari browser if you're short on patience. All tutorials are provided for free courtesy of Brown and Adobe Systems.

Classification of Computers

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Computers are available in different shapes, sizes and weights, due to these different shapes and sizes they perform different sorts of jobs from one another.
They can also be classified in different ways. All the computers are designed by the qualified computer architectures that design these machines as their requirements.
A computer that is used in a home differs in size and shape from the computer being used in a hospital. Computers act as a server in large buildings, while the computer also differs in size and shape performing its job as a weather forecaster.

A student carrying a laptop with him to his college is different in shape and size from all the computers mentioned above.

Here we are going to introduce different classifications of computers one by one. We will discuss what are in classifications and what job they perform.

Super computer
The biggest in size, the most expensive in price than any other is classified and known as super computer. It can process trillions of instructions in seconds. This computer is not used as a PC in a home neither by a student in a college.
Governments specially use this type of computer for their different calculations and heavy jobs. Different industries also use this huge computer for designing their products.
In most of the Hollywood’s movies it is used for animation purposes. This kind of computer is also helpful for forecasting weather reports worldwide.

Mainframes
Another giant in computers after the super computer is Mainframe, which can also process millions of instruction per second and capable of accessing billions of data.
This computer is commonly used in big hospitals, air line reservations companies, and many other huge companies prefer mainframe because of its capability of retrieving data on a huge basis.
This is normally to expensive and out of reach from a salary-based person who wants a computer for his home.
This kind of computer can cost up to thousands of dollars.

Minicomputer
This computer is next in he line but less offers less than mainframe in work and performance. These are the computers, which are mostly preferred by the small type of business personals, colleges, etc.

Personal computers
Almost all the computer users are familiar with the personal computers. They normally know what the personal computer is and what are its functions.
This is the computer mostly preferred by the home users. These computers are lesser in cost than the computers given above and also, small in size; they are also called PCs in short for Personal computers.
This computer is small in size and you can easily arrange it to fit in your single bedroom with its all accommodation. Today this is thought to be the most popular computer in all.

Notebook computers
Having a small size and low weight the notebook is easy to carry to anywhere. A student can take it with him/her to his/her school in his/her bag with his/her book.
This is easy to carry around and preferred by students and business people to meet their assignments and other necessary tasks.
The approach of this computer is also the same as the Personal computer. It can store the same amount of data and having a memory of the same size as that of a personal computer. One can say that it is the replacement of personal desktop computer.

Laptop Buying Guide

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Price

Laptop prices have come down dramatically in the last few years. I just purchased a top-notch travel notebook for $1600. That's a far cry from the middle of the road laptop-brick that I scraped to buy five years ago for $2300.
There are budget machines well below the $1000 mark. Acer, HP, Apple and Toshiba all make a budget line of laptops that can do the trick for portability at a price.

Student Discounts

If you are a college student, be sure to check your bookstore for the student discount; usually around 15%. You might consider buying your software from a deeply discounted education site like journeyed.com. Also browse the student or education section on a computer manufacturer's website. You may have to prove you are actually enrolled, but for 15%, it's worth showing your student ID. I suggest starting at HP's education program or Apple's Education program.

Size

Size is a huge factor in the purchase of a laptop. If you are a road-warrior, you probably want a light-weight machine with plenty of battery life. If you want a desktop-replacement system that lives at home or in the office get a laptop that has a fast processor, many components, and a large screen size; all factors which increase the laptop's weight.
The more you want from your laptop, the bigger and heavier it will be. I travel a ton and I have found the best weight to features equation is about a 4.5 pound machine.

Use

There are a myriad of form factors and flavors of laptops these days. Tablet PCs allow you to use a stylus to write on the screen. Tablets are perfect for computing while standing up or for use in the classroom actually taking notes. Buying a laptop with Microsoft's Media Center Operating System affords you all the features of a regular laptop, but the OS also acts like a TiVo: recording video and storing it on the hard drive. You can plug your laptop in at home and watch your recorded shows on the airplane. Companies like Alienware make gaming specific laptops, and Apple's MacBook Pros come with enough power and style to tempt anyone into switching over.
This entry is just meant to wet your whistle if you are just starting the process of buying a laptop. Here are a few guides to help you dive in deeper once you've answered my three questions about price, size and use.

Two Considerations when Buying a New Camera

Posted by Memey on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Planning on buying a new digital camera? Among the many choices you have to make including megapixels, image quality, and zoom capability, here are two more things you should consider:

Media Type: There are lots of media types available for cameras, such as CompactFlash, SecureMedia, etc. Because of my previous purchases of CompactFlash cards that I used in older cameras, if upgrading, I would not want to purchase a camera that used a different type of memory unless its other features far outweighed those of competing cameras. Memory prices are going down, but cards are still not cheap and I don't want to 'throw away' this media investment when upgrading.

Some cameras are realizing that not everyone wants to use their manufacturer's proprietary media format. For example, the upcoming (at the time of this tip's writing) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F828 uses Sony's Memory Stick format, but this digital camera also supports CompactFlash and MicroDrives.

Battery Type: If you currently use rechargeable batteries, factor into your purchasing decision whether or not your 'dream' camera supports the same types of batteries. I own six or seven sets of AA NiMH rechargeable batteries and would be very weary of purchasing a camera that had its own custom battery type. Of course, if the digital camera offered double the megapixels, a wider zoom lens, and better quality photos, I might reconsider (grin).

How Do I Speed XP's Shutdown?

Posted by Memey on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Tips for getting out of Windows more quickly.

You could hard-boil an egg in the time it takes some Windows XP systems to shut down. If your PC doesn't know how to say good night, Gracie, try these tips.

Don't Shut Down, HibernateThere are only two reasons to shut down Windows: to save electricity, and to reset the operating system when it starts acting goofy. If nothing really bad is happening and the stars have aligned correctly, XP can run reliably for days or even weeks between boots. So instead of shutting down your system, tell it to go to sleep.
Putting Windows into Hibernate mode copies the contents of your machine's RAM to your hard disk, then powers everything down, which saves just as much electricity as shutting it down--from the hardware point of view, the two actions are identical. Hibernating XP and waking it out of hibernation take much less time than closing it and rebooting. For more information, read the "Enable Hibernation" section in my September 2002 Answer Line.

Close Programs FirstWindows must close every running program before it can shut itself down, which is time consuming. Of course, you could close each program manually beforehand to speed up the shutdown--but unless Windows seems to take forever to close, that won't save you much time.
However, if your shutdowns are unusually slow, you could try closing your running programs (both your applications and your system tray icons) prior to turning Windows off. If your system shuts down more quickly, one of those programs is causing the hang-up.
Watch Out for Bad DriversBuggy or improperly installed drivers can also cause shutdown difficulties. Check to see if your device drivers need updates by right-clicking My Computer and selecting Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Look for entries with yellow question marks or red exclamation points: A question mark indicates that Windows is using a generic driver for that device instead of one designed for it, and an exclamation point means that the device is not working.

The drivers for graphics boards, sound cards, and printers are most likely to need an update. Visit the vendors' Web sites to download the updated drivers to your PC. Then right-click the entry in Device Manager, choose Update Driver, and step through the wizard, selecting "No, not this time" to the Windows Update question, and choosing the "specified location" option when it appears. When you're able to navigate to the driver file, select it and click OK to install it. When you finish updating your drivers, close all open windows.
Terminate Terminal ServicesWindows XP's Terminal Services can also cause recalcitrant shutdowns. That's more, if you never use remote desktop, fast user switching, remote assistance, the terminal server, or other Terminal Services, you don't need them. To shut it off, select Start, Run, type services.msc /s, and press Enter. Find and double-click the Terminal Services listing. (Of course, if you don't have Terminal Services installed, your slow shutdowns have another cause.) Change "Startup type" to Disabled or Manual and click OK.
Don't Clear Virtual MemoryIf you use Windows XP Pro (but not the Home edition, alas), you can speed up your shutdowns by verifying that you're not clearing your virtual memory whenever you exit Windows. Select Start, Run, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter. Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options in the left pane. In the right pane, scroll to Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile. If the option is enabled, double-click it, select Disabled, and click OK. (You may not have this option on your system.)

Reduce Windows' Wait TimeYou can speed up some shutdowns--and risk losing unsaved data--by reducing the time Windows waits for a program to stop itself properly before taking this job into its own disruptive hands. But first, save a restore point as described in the third option in Scott Dunn's "No-Brainer Backups Using Windows' Own Tools." Then select Start, Run, type regedit, and press Enter. In the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control. Double-click the WaitToKillServiceTimeout item in the right pane. Set it to a value lower than the default 2000 (or 2 seconds), perhaps to 1000 (1 second). Click OK, and then reboot.
